So Jest End, Parody of West End Musicals, to Run at New Players Theatre

By Mark Shenton
20 Apr 2009

So Jest End, a show based around parodies of West End musicals, will run at the New Players Theatre for three late-night performances, April 23-25, beginning at 11 PM London time.

The first performance will be a gala in aid of TheatreMAD and the Mercury Phoenix Trust. Formed by original founders and volunteers of West End Cares and Theatrecares, TheatreMAD is the theatre industry’s new independent charity established to support those people facing hardship as a result of HIV, AIDS and other long-term conditions.

An earier version of the show was seen at Leicester Square Theatre last November.

So Jest End is devised and directed by Garry Lake, currently playing Pop in We Will Rock You, with Gareth Ellis (Wicked) as musical director and Rebecca Howell (Billy Elliot, La Cage aux Folles) as choreographer. The show will be narrated by Paul Nicholas (the original Rum Tum Tugger in Cats and veteran of many other West End musicals, from Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar to Grease and The Pirates of Penzance, who is best known for his TV role as Vince in “Just Good Friends”), and the cast includes Rachel Tucker (BBC1’s “I’d Do Anything”), Jon Boydon (We Will Rock You), Louise Dearman (Evita on tour) and Ian Carlyle (We Will Rock You), with guests including Ian Kelsey (ITV1’s “Emmerdale,” Chicago) and Sandra Marvin (Hairspray).

WOS Backs So Jest End Comedy at New Players

GL0002_JestEndLogo_2009

After sell-out dates at the Jermyn Street and Leicester Square Theatres last year, the musical comedy show SO JEST END returns for three nights only – 23, 24 and 25 April 2009 – at the New Players Theatre at Charing Cross.

Whatsonstage.com has come on board as the official media partner to the production, which aims to become a more regular West End fixture in future, and the capital’s “top comedy event for theatrical escapism”.

The Forbidden Broadway-style show is given a more contemporary twist with regularly updated material parodying the West End’s most popular musicals. It’s devised and directed by Garry Lake (currently Pop in Queen’s We Will Rock You) and features fellow We Will Rock You stars Rachel Tucker – from TV’s I’d Do Anything, nominated in this year’s Whatsonstage.com Awards for Best Takeover for the Queen musical – Jon Boydon and Ian Carlyle as well as Louise Dearman (Evita).

The evening is hosted by stage and screen star Paul Nicholas, with special guests including Ian Kelsey (Chicago, TV’s Emmerdale) and Sandra Marvin (Hairspray). It’s choreographed by Rebecca Howell, with musical direction by Gareth Ellis.

Commenting on Whatsonstage.com’s partnership with SO JEST END, editorial director Terri Paddock said: “Whatsonstage.com is all about celebrating theatre and we’re impressed by SO JEST END’s approach of doing this in fun, light-hearted but loving, way. We hope it becomes a weekly Theatreland must-see.”

For the New Players engagement, a special, star-studded gala performance – at 11.00pm on Thursday 23 April 2009 – will be held in aid of Whatsonstage.com’s 2009 adopted charity TheatreMAD (Theatre: Make A Difference), which supports those facing hardship as a result of HIV, AIDS and other long-term conditions.
